MELBOURNE WRITERS FESTIVAL
27 August to 5 September, 2010

...........................................................
To be launched at the Melbourne Writers' Festival, Sunday 29 August, 2.30 pm.
Michael Wilding
THE PRISONER OF MOUNT WARNING

What were the 60s & 70s really about? How authentic were those stoned revolutionaries?
What if it was all a fraud?
When Charles Dorritt recovers from a breakdown by doing a creative writing course, he announces
he is publishing his memoirs of torture and sex-slavery at the hands of the security services.
Plant is called to lunch with lifestyle journalist Angela Dark, political speechwriter Ghostly Sperrit,
and the arts editor of a metropolitan broadsheet, all of them deeply concerned that the revelations should not appear.
They hire Plant to have a word with Dorritt,
But Dorritt heads off to Byron Bay and Plant pursues him through the dope lands of northern New South Wales.
A past era of magic mushrooms, free love, American friends, and an alternative newspaper of deep-level inauthenticity
begins to emerge, something that no one but Plant is keen to see revealed.
From the same college (but a different school) as John Le Carré, Michael Wilding will open your eyes, and darken your mind,
with this vision of the not-so-secret state.
If this was as much fun to write as it is to read, Michael Wilding must have enjoying writing The Prisoner of Mount Warning. A take on
the secret world, mainstream and underground journalism, Writers’ Centres, the counter culture and much else, the book is a heady ride
from Sydney to Byron Bay and the Gold Coast with Plant, resting writer, investigating something that might have happened but perhaps not.
Wilding has created a world both funny and creepy for Plant and the reader. – Peter Corris

She grew up in Eastville (near Bendigo) and attended Melbourne University. Katherine has five full collections of poetry,
including her most recent, Carnival Edge: New & Selected Poems (Arc Publications, 2010).
She has lived and worked in London since 1979 and has been very active in giving readings
and running workshops for adults and children.
Workshop one: Magic Realism 9:30am-12:30pm
Poetry is a strong way of saying, and by looking at metaphor and opening up to the magical we will take off
on unexpected journeys beyond
realism, discussing inspiring contemporary poems en route. We will explore our own ideas,
feelings and memories through writing-exercises
and constructive feedback.
Workshop two: Places: Discovery & Belonging 1:30pm-4:30pm
Using contemporary ‘example’ poems, we will explore our own ideas, feelings and memories,
transforming the autobiographical through writing exercises and constructive feedback. In both workshops one and two,
we will discuss the place of the senses in increasing awareness of our lives,
including our memories, one of our greatest resources. Also, we will explore how poetry heightens our feeling of reality
alongside ways to map the tension between imagination and reality in attempts to ‘make it new’.
Both workshops are suitable for new and experienced writers.

THE AUSTRALIAN POETRY CENTRE
The Poetry Archive is proud to announce that they can now bring the voices of more
Australian poets to the ears of their visitors. The River Road Press, an Australian press
devoted to publishing recordings of the country’s poets, has teamed up with the Archive
to make five of their poets available online.
UK Poet Laureate Andrew Motion said: “It has always been our intention to make the Poetry
Archive as widely representative as possible of poetry in English, and these latest
additions, by very distinguished Australian poets, are an ornament to the site. We’re
proud and grateful to have them, and the wider world will be grateful too.”
The first poets to be featured are Stephen Edgar, Judith Beveridge, joanne burns, Peter
Boyle and Vivian Smith. River Road Press will be continuing this partnership with The
Poetry Archive with more work and voices of more key Australian poets later this year.

Attn: Arts and Culture Officer/Manager
You are invited to participate in a new research initiative of the Victorian Writers’ Centre
in collaboration with the Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas.
This research aims to develop a complete database of literary activity within Victoria which will be available to the public.
This will assist in building audiences for the literary sector.
You may be aware that Melbourne has been named a City of Literature as part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities network.
A central part of the City of Literature initiative will be the establishment of Australia's first Centre for Books,
Writing and Ideas at the State Library of Victoria later this year. It will be the heart of Victoria's literary
and publishing community and a hub for the public to access Victoria's widespread literary activity in one location.
This research will greatly assist the Centre in establishing networks crucial to building this dynamic hub.

In order to collect as much information from the arts sector as possible, we ask that you take a few moments
to complete our online survey.
Go to the research survey here http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Acu12mLUHqWsLmfQ2K1R7Q_3d_3d
Please also forward this to any literary organisations or people involved in the literary sector in your region.
If you would like to participate in the research but would prefer to do this by phone,
please contact the Victorian Writers’ Centre advising of a suitable time and a contact phone number.
Thank you for participating in this research initiative.

MACQUARIE PEN ANTHOLOGY OF ABORIGINAL LITERATURE
A groundbreaking collection of work from some of the great Australian Aboriginal writers,
the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Aboriginal Literature offers a rich panorama of over 200 years
of Aboriginal culture, history and life.
From Bennelong's 1796 letter to contemporary creative writers, Anita Heiss and Peter Minter have
selected work that represents the range and depth of Aboriginal writing in English.
The anthology includes journalism, petitions and political letters from both the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries, as well as major works that reflect the blossoming of Aboriginal poetry,
prose and drama from the mid-twentieth century onwards. Literature has been used as a powerful political
tool by Aboriginal people in a political system which renders them largely voiceless. These works
chronicle the ongoing suffering of dispossession, but also the resilience of Aboriginal people across
the country, and the hope and joy in their lives.

................................................................................................
Chapbook-from Wikepedia
is a generic term to cover a particular genre of pocket-sized booklet,
popular from the sixteenth through to the later part of the nineteenth century.
No exact definition can be applied.
The term chap-book was formalized by bibliophiles of the 19th century,
as a variety of ephemera (disposable printed material), popular or folk literature.
It includes many kinds of printed material, such as pamphlets, political and religious tracts,
nursery rhymes, poetry, folk tales, children's literature and almanacs. Where there were illustrations,
they would be popular prints.
The term is derived from chapmen, a variety of peddler, who circulated such literature as part of their stock.
